Understanding Energy Consumption
in a Leisure Centre

Mixed use Leisure Facilities are the most common type of Leisure Centre in the UK, and at the end of 2010 there are 3322 Leisure Facilities with indoor swimming pools.  Pools are the greatest consumer of energy in the Leisure industry.

A mixed use leisure centre may contain the following sports facilities:

  • Swimming Pool
  • Dry Sports hall
  • Courts
  • Ice rink
  • Gymnasium & exercise rooms
  • Associated changing and social functions

When we analyse the energy consumption in a typical Mixed Use Leisure Centre you can see that more than 50% of energy used is consumed by the pool itself, and when the impact of the wet changing facilities are included you can see that 2/3 of the buildings energy consumption is down to swimming activities and management of the pool hall.
